ABOUT US

Glynis Cancer Foundation was established in 2017 by Glynis Cox-Finnie. The non-profit organization is headquartered in Memphis, TN and provides breast cancer support services to patients who are newly diagnosed, in treatment, or in post-treatment.

The organization seeks to remove barriers and provide resources that allows cancer patients to focus on getting well while assisting them through their journey.

As a breast cancer survivor, Ms. Cox-Finnie recognized the difficulty of navigating through the myriad of emotional, financial, and healthcare needs after a cancer diagnosis.  This was the primary reason this organization was formed.

HER STORY

When I got by mammogram results, the doctor told me she thought it was Stage 4 cancer.  I went home and prayed that night.  When I went to see my oncologist, he told me it was Stage 3.  I remember smiling and saying, “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I’ll be just fine. I’m covered.”  That was my confirmation that God would take care of me.

I had Stage 3 Triple Negative breast cancer. Triple-Negative breast cancer is any cancer that tests negative for three of the main things -- the hormones estrogen and progesterone and a protein called HER2 -- that drive other forms of the disease.

Triple-negative breast cancer is more aggressive than other forms. It’s more likely to spread beyond your breast, and there’s a higher chance it will come back within the first 5 years after treatment.  I was not phased by this information.  My decision was to trust God, my healer!

While my faith in God had to remain strong, I knew that my positive outlook had to be just as strong.  I maintained a steady response, what I like to call my mantra.  I greeted everyone I met with a shout of “Yaaaaayyyyyy!” This response was contagious to those around me and encouraged others through their journey too.

In preparation for my first round of chemo, one of my co-workers had a cancer patient call me to share her experience.  She couldn’t do chemo because it made her extremely ill (instead she did herbal treatments).  She said the first thing they gave her was red (a toxic fluid used as part of chemotherapy for breast cancer.  It is so destructive that it can cause severe burns if it touches the skin).

She referred to it as the “devil.”  Other breast cancer patients call it the “red devil.”  And low and behold, that would be the same drug they gave me too, but I called it “the blood of Jesus.”  My nurse said she never heard anyone call it that.  For me, it was all about my response and attitude to everything I would encounter.  I had to remain positive.  My “Yaaaaayyyyyy” went into effect during every chemo session.

I was never alone during my chemo sessions - my dad, daughter, son, and aunt made sure they were by my side.  The support of my family, friends, and coworkers during my journey was nothing short of amazing. However, I noticed that many breast cancer patients went through their chemo sessions with no one there to support them.  It didn’t sit well with me.  This observation birthed a passion within me to do something…the “what” would soon manifest.

For two months, I went through my chemo treatments with a smile and my Yaaaaayyyyyy!  I was on a journey with God, experiencing faith at levels I never knew before.  The last chemo treatment brought another smile and another “Yaaaaayyyyyy.”  I got my certificate and it was over (so I thought) but the doctors said they got the cancer but wanted to do radiation to be on the safe side.  I was not having any of it; the chemo was enough to endure.  No way was I having radiation after experiencing chemo.  I wasn’t hearing it. I was done!

One day I stopped to say hello to the nurses who treated me.  A man approached me, someone who I’d never met before, stated that his wife was having her chemo treatment and wanted to see me.  I didn’t know this man and certainly didn’t know his wife. She told me how my positive attitude and “Yaaaaayyyyyy” helped her during her journey.  She asked about my status and I told her I decided to not have radiation.  She encouraged me to reconsider to ensure I did everything I could to prevent re-occurrence.  I went home and prayed to God to help me through the process.  (I am still amazed at how God put strangers in my path to help me obtain peace and seek him about my next steps.)

I endured radiation with the same positive outlook that I spoke during my first chemo treatment – “I have cancer and by faith I am healed.” Now years later, I AM healed and I am CANCER-FREE!

Now my journey and mission to help others continues through the Glynis Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization that I established. I know firsthand the difficulty, overwhelm, and emotional roller-coaster that comes with a breast cancer diagnosis.  I want to ensure newly diagnosed breast cancer patients get the support they need and not feel alone in their breast cancer journey.

We may not have a cure for cancer YET, but we can uplift each cancer patient during their most difficult moments.
